Description of Shalya Chikitsa is found in 4/12 of Atharvaveda. Grass, wood, iron etc. entering the body due to modern trauma are called Shalya Chikitsa, because they cause pain to the body. Dust particles falling into the eye cause pain. Even one's own bone breaking due to trauma and entering the nearby visceral organ is very painful. Similarly, pus present in the body also causes severe pain.

The secretion collected in ascites, hydrocele and pleural effusion also causes chronic pain. Microorganism, bacteria etc. present in the infected wound are also removed by surgery. Therefore, the solution to all these is possible only through Shalya Chikitsa.
